Ocean shore zone

What is the ocean shore zone? The area where the ocean meets the land.
What features does the ocean shore zone have and what can affect them? Beaches, Barrier Islands, Estuaries, and Inlets and they are affected by waves, tides, currents, and storms.
What are beaches ad how are they affected? Shorelines made of sand. Waves wear away the sand, Currents move the sand around, tides bring in shells, sand, and sediment.
What features are on a beach? Sand dunes sweep up in mounds and plants hold them in place.
What are Barrier Islands? Pieces of land surrounded by water on al sides.
What features Does a Barrier Island have? They have sandy beaches and protect the mainland from the storm waves.
What are estuaries? All rivers flow into the Ocean. The area where the river meets the ocean is a estuary.
What is an Inlet? water filled spaces between Barrier Islands. As the Tides change the amount of water in the inlet changes. Ocean currents and storms can change the shape of an Inlet opening.
What is a current? An ongoing movement of ocean water
How is a current formed? caused by the wind moving across the surface of the water.
What are waves? The repeated movement of water.
How are Waves formed? winds blown across the surface of the water.
What are tides? This regular rise and fall of the water on the shores of the oceans and seas.
How are tides caused? pull of the moons gravity on earth.
How are estuaries affected? They are affected by waves because they can deposit sand and at high tide the water brings out sediment and sea life.
How are barrier islands affected? Waves deposit sand and change the shape of the Island.
