TermDefinition
Answer Any pleading setting up matters of fact by way of defense.
Arraignment/Initial Hearing the hearing in which a person charged with a crime is arraigned in his or her first appearance before a judge
Arrest to deprive one of his liberty by virtue of legal authority.
Civil Court a court dealing with noncriminal cases.
Closing Arguments the final argument by an attorney on behalf of his/her client after all evidence has been produced for both sides
Complainant a plaintiff in certain lawsuits.
Complaint a statement that a situation is unsatisfactory or unacceptable
Criminal Court a court having jurisdiction over criminal cases
Defendant an individual, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law.
Evidence the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.
Federal District Courts are the workhorses of the federal judiciary. Just about every civil or criminal case heard in the federal courts starts at the district court level.
Grand Jury a jury, normally of twenty-three jurors, selected to examine the validity of an accusation before trial.
Initial Bail released or free as a result of having posted bond
Jury Instructions are the set of legal rules that jurors ought follow when deciding a case.
Jury Selection are many methods used to choose the people who will serve on a jury. The jury pool, also known as the venire
Juvenile Court a court of law responsible for the trial or legal supervision of children under a specified age
Magistrates’ Court The magistrates' court is the generic name given to a lower court constituted by magistrates and justices of the peace
N. C. Court of Appeals is the only intermediate appellate court in the state of North Carolina.
N. C. District Court A state court of general jurisdiction in some states.
N. C. Superior Court All felony criminal cases, civil cases involving more than $10,000 and misdemeanor and infraction appeals from District Cour
N. C. Supreme Court is the state's highest court, and there is no further appeal in the state from their decisions
Opening Statement is generally the first occasion that the trier of fact (jury or judge)
Pleadings a formal statement of the cause of an action or defense
Summons an order to appear before a judge or magistrate, or the writ containing it.

U. S. Court of Appeals The Federal Circuit hears appeals from specialized trial courts, primarily the United States Court of International Trade and the United States Court of Federal Claims
