Critical Thinking Active, organized, cognitive process used to carefully examine one's thinking and the thinking of others.

Critical Thinking Basic Level Answers to problems are either right or wrong, and one right answer usually exists for each problem.
Complex Critical Thinking The person's thinking abilities and initiative to look beyond expert opinion begin to change. A nurse learns that alternative and perhaps conflicting solutions exist.
Commitment Third Level Critical Thinking At this level a person anticipates the need to make choices w/o assistance from others, and accepts accountability for it. You do more than just consider the complex alternatives.
General Critical Thinking Competencies Scientific Method, Problem Solving,
Problem Solving Using information plus what we already know to solve a problem. Effective problem solving also involves evaluating the solution over time to make sure that it is effective.
Decision Making Product of critical thinking that focuses on problem resolution.
Specific Critical Thinking Competencies Diagnostic reasoning, clinical inference and clinical decision making
Diagnostic Reasoning The process of determining a client's health status after you assign meaning to the behaviors, physical signs, and symptoms presented by the client.
Inference The process of drawing conclusions from related pieces of evidence.
Clinical Decision-Making Requires careful reasoning to choose the options for the best client outcomes based on client condition and priority of problem. (Improves w/ knowing clients.)
Nursing Process 5-Step Clinical Decision-Making approach, ADPIE, Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Reflective Journaling Tool in developing critical thought and reflection through clarifying concepts.
Concept Mapping Visual representation of client problems and interventions that deos relationships to one another.
Intellectual Standard Standard used in critical thinking model which is a guideline or principle for rational thought. Examples include preciseness, accuracy and consistency.
Professional Standard Prefessional standards refer to ethical criteria for nursing judgements, evidence based criteria used for evaluation, and criteria for professional responsibility.
Scientific Method Systematic ordered approach to gathering data and solving problems.
Problem Solving Obtaining information and then using that information plus what we already know to find a solution. Effective problem solving involves evaluating the solution over time to make sure that it is effective.
