hardness a measure of how hard a mineral is, measured on the Mohs Scale
cleavage how minerals break along flat sides; clean, straight breaks
fracture how minerals break in an irregular, unexpected way
rock a mix of two or more minerals
igneous rock rock formed from the melting and cooling of other rock
lava molten rock on the earth's surface
extrusive rock igneous rock formed on the earth's surface
sediment broken down rock, turned into silt, sand, clay, etc.
compaction a method of sedimentary rock formation, where layers of rock are pressed into new rock
cementation when different sizes of sediment become held together to form new rock
sedimentary rock rock that is formed from the pressing together of particles of smaller rocks (sediment)
metamorphic rock rock formed from turning parent rock into a new type with heat and pressure
parent rock the rock that turns into a new rock when exposed to heat and pressure
rock cycle the never-ending cycle of rock types being turned into other rock types
magma molten rock inside the earth
intrusive rock igneous rock formed inside the earth
