All About Atmosphere

TermDefinition
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air
Relative Humidity The % of water vapor that's ACTUALLY in the air compared to the max amount the air can hold
Dew Point The temperature at which condensation forms
Cirrus Clouds Wispy, feather clouds form at high altitudes
Cumulus Clouds Fluffy, rounded piles of cotton, form less than 2 km above the ground
Stratus Clouds Flat, spread out layers, may cover the whole sky
Air Mass Huge body of air that has similar temp, humidity and air pressure
Tropical Air Mass Warm air mass that forms in the tropics and have low air pressure
Polar Air Mass Cold air masses form at north and south poles and has high air pressure
Maritime Air Mass Air mass that forms over oceans
Continental Air Mass Air mass that forms over land and is drier.
Front Boundary where 2 air masses meet
Cold Front Fast moving dense air sinks under slow moving warm air
Warm Front Fast moving warm air mass overtakes a slow moving cold air mass
Stationary Front Cold and warm air masses meet in a standoff
Occluded Front Warm air mass is caught and trapped between 2 cold air masses
Cyclone A swirling center of low pressure
Anti-cyclone High pressure center of dry air
Storm Violent disturbance in the atmosphere involving sudden changes in air pressure
Lightening & Thunder Sudden spark of electrical discharge that has built up in storm clouds. Thunder ALWAYS follows lightening
Storm Surge A dome of water that sweeps across the coast where a hurricane lands
Thunderstorm Small storms with heavy precipitation and thunder and lightening
Tornado Rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud
Snow Storm Heavy snowfalls that block roads, etc.
Hurricane Tropical cyclone with very high winds
Rain Drizzle & mist
Hail Round ice pellets larger than .5 mm
Snow Water that becomes ice crystals called snowflakes
Sleet Ice particles smaller than 5 mm
Freezing Rain Raindrops that freeze on cold surfaces
