QuestionAnswer
Beat A regularly recurring sound that divides the passing of time into equal units.
Tempo Speed at which the beat sounds.
Downbeat First beat in each measure. (Has strongest accent or stress)
Accent The stress placed on musical tone or chord.
Measure A group of beats. (BAR)
The basic elements of organization Rhythm, melody, and harmony.
Rhythm Deals with organization of time.
Meter Organization of beats into regular groups.
Most common meters Duple, triple.
Time signature A symbol that tells the performer...; Top number = how many beats per measure; bottom number = the note value of the beat.
Syncopation Displaces the natural accent by putting the accent on a weak beat or between beats.
Melody A series of notes arranged in order...; the tune
Octave The duplication of a pitch at a higher or lower level; first and eighth tones of the diatonic scale.
Scale A succession of pitches within the octave.
Tonality The organization of music around a central pitch.
Tonic The central note.
Key Term for the tonality of a piece of music; tonal center built on a tonic note and making use of a scale.
Harmony One or more pitches that support and accompany a melody.
Treble clef The sign placed on a staff to indicate the notes above middle C.
Great staff large musical staff that combines both the treble and the bass clefs.
Modulation Change in tonal center from one key to another.
Major scale A seven note scale.
Bass Clef Indicate notes below middle C.
Dossonance Seeks resolution.
Chord Two or more pitches that sound at the same time.
Chord Progression A succession of chords moving forward in a purposeful fashion.
Any element of music that continually repeats is called an ostiano True.
Doo-wop A type of soul music from 1950s.
Interval Distance between two pitches.
