TermDefinition
Politics the study of who gets what, when and how.
Political Power the ability to influence the political behavior of others.
Elitist political power held by a small group of wealthy, powerful men who maintain their position over time.
Government an institution within a society in which decisions are made that resolve conflicts and allocate benefits and privileges for all members of society.
Institution an ongoing organization that performs certain functions for society.
Political System serves the function of making decisions that effects an entire society.
Public Policy the decisions or outcome of political systems-the decisions that are made by the government.
Aristocracy rule by the best suited through virtue, talent or education...ruled by the upper class.
Totalitarian Regime form of government that controls all aspects of the political and social life of a nation.
Democracy-Direct system of government in which political decisions are made by the people directly, rather than by elected representatives.
Democracy-Representative citizens transfer their decision making power to the people they elect to represent them.
Initiative a procedure by which voters can propose a law or constitutional amendment.
Recall a procedure allowing the people to vote to dismiss an elected official from state office before their term is expired.
Liberal set of beliefs that includes the advocacy of positive government action to improve the welfare of individuals, support for civil rights, and tolerance for political and social change.
Conservative set of beliefs that includes a limited role for the national government in helping individuals.
Political Culture pattern of beliefs and attitudes towards government and the political process held by a community or nation
Political Ideology a comprehensive set of beliefs about the native of people and about the role of an institution of government.
Political Socialization process through an individual learns a set of political attitudes and values.
Jus Soli citizenship by place of birth.
Jus Sanguinis citizenship by blood.
Political Refugee persons who have well founded fear of persecution in their own country based on race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.
Alien An individual who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. national.
Naturalization an act of conferring citizenship upon an alien.
Interest Group an original organized group of individuals sharing a common objectives who actively attempt to influence policy makers.
Lobbying an organization who attempt to influence legislation and the administrative decisions of the government.
AARP largest interest group in the US. American.Association.Retired.People -50 years old to join
Referendum the submission of a proposed public measure or actual statute to a direct popular vote.
Pluralist everyone has some sort of political power
