What are some interventions to decrease risk of infections? promote general health and well being, treat ALL body fluids as infections, vaccines, sterile technique, assess fluid and nutrition status, decrease level of stress
Drug selection criteria? C&S, patient tolerence, allergy and contradictions, specific to infectious organism, site of infection, dosage requirements, cost
When do you obtain a culture? Before starting antibiodics
What are the modes of action of antimicrobials? Inhibit cell wall synthesis(bacteriocidal & bacteriostatic)
what are 2 steps of the CDC 12 step approach to preventing rsistance? Vaccinate and get the catheters out (b/c bacteria will grow)
What are some adverse side effects of Tetracyclines? Photosensitivity and Permanent discoloration of teeth
What is a contraindication of Sulfonamides? Patients under two months of age (elevates bilirubin b/c undeveloped liver)
What type of microorganisms is Vancomycin active against? Gram Positive
What is important to remember about administering Vancomycin? Admisister slowly through central line or PICC.
What drug is the first line of therapy for TB? Isoniazid
What is a adverse effect of the TB medication Rifampin? Harmless red orange discoloration of urine, tears, sweat, and other body fluids (may stain contact lenses permanently)
When administering the Fungal medication Nysatin, how do you give it orally? Swish and swallow
Vermox is a medication given for what? Broad spectrum, Pinworms, hookworms, roundworms
Permethrin is given for what Scabicide (scabies)
