Unit 4 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Elimination The use of addition or subtraction to eliminate one variable and solve a system of equations
Open half-plane The solution of a linear inequality that EXCLUDES the boundary line
Solution The coordinate pair that is true for both equations
Substitution method Algebraic method for finding the solution to a system of equations
Independent If a consistent system has exactly one solution
Dependent If a consistent system has infinitely many solutions; the graph only has one line
Inconsistent If a system has no solution, the graphs are parallel
Consistent The system has at least one solution; the graphs intersect at one point or are the same line
System of linear inequatities Set of two or more inequalities with the same variables
Half-plane The region of the graph of an inequality on one side on a boundary
Closed half-plane The solution of a linear inequality that INCLUDES the boundary line
System of equations Two or more equations
Boundary A line or curve that separates a graph into regions
