Phases/Eclipses/Tide

A review of phases, eclipses, and tides.

QuestionAnswer
How long does it take for the Moon to complete one revolution around the Earth? 27.3 days
What causes phases of the Moon? The position of the Moon around the Earth and how much of the sunlit side of the Moon faces Earth.
Why do we always see the same side of the Moon? Because the Moon rotates at the same rate that it revolves.
Which Moon phase would you see a small sliver of light on the right side of the Moon? Waxing crescent
Which Moon phase would you see most of the Moon full, however there is a small amount of darkness on the right side of the Moon? Waning gibbous
Which Moon phase occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and Earth? New Moon
How long does it take for the Moon to start at a new Moon phase and return to a new Moon phase? 29.5 days
Which Moon phase does the Moon appear 1/2 lit and the light is on the right side? First-quarter
When an object in space comes between the Sun and a third object in space, a(n) ___________________ occurs. Eclipse
A _______________ eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Sun and Earth. Solar
A _______________ eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and Moon. Lunar
The ________________ is the darkest part of the shadow. Umbra
The _________________ is the largest part of the shadow, but is less dark than the umbra. Penumbra
A lunar eclipse occurs only during a _______________ Moon phase. Full
A solar eclipse occurs only during a _______________ Moon phase. New
Why isn't there an eclipse every time there's a full or new Moon? Because the Moon's orbit is tilted around the Earth. As a result, the Moon rarely falls into the Earth's shadow, and the Earth rarely falls into the Moon's shadow.
If you were on Earth during a solar eclipse, and suddenly it became completely dark out. What would you see in the sky from Earth? A total solar eclipse. The Moon would be blocking the sunlight.
What type of eclipse is viewable by more people and why? A lunar eclipse. Because everyone on the dark side of the Moon can see the lunar eclipse, while only those in the Moon's small umbra can see the solar eclipse.
This is the rise and fall of ocean water. Tides
What causes tides? Mainly how much of the Moon's gravity pulls on different parts of Earth.
Where on Earth will there be high tides? The place on Earth closest to the Moon, and the place on the other side of the Earth, farthest from the Moon.
During which Moon phases does a spring tide occur? New Moon and full Moon
What happens to high and low tides during a spring tide? There is a great difference between high and low tides.
During which Moon phases does a neap tide occur? First-quarter and third-quarter
What happens to high and low tides during a neap tide? There is not a great difference between high and low tides.
If you went to the beach a 9 am and there was a high tide, at what time could you expect the low tide to arrive? 3 pm
If you went to the beach a 9 am and there was a high tide, at what time could you expect the next high tide to arrive? 9 pm
How many high tides and low tides does one location on the shore have a day? 2 high and 2 low
Why does the Moon's gravity have a greater effect on Earth's ocean tides than the Sun's gravity? Because the Moon is closer.
