Rocks

Ch 6 Test Review

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 major types of Rocks? Igneous, Metamorphic, & Sedimentary
What type of rock is formed in and around Volcanoes? igneous
what are the 2 types of Igneous rocks? extrusive and intrusive
Where are INtrusive rocks formed? (inside Earth or outside Earth?) INside - INtrusive
Do intrusive rocks cool quickly or slowly? slowly (inside Earth, insulated, longer to cool)
what size crystals do intrusive rocks have? (large or small) Large (cools slowly, has time to form larger crystals)
Are intrusive rocks made from magma or lava? magma (still called magma while INside earth)
Where are EXtrusive rocks formed? (inside Earth or ouside Earth) outside Earth (EXtrusive - EXited Earth)
Do EXtrusive rocks form quickly or slowly? quickly (EXtrusive - molten material (lava) has EXited Earth and cools faster when EXposed to air)
What size crystals do EXtrusive rocks have? small crystals or has holes or glassy appearance (cools too quickly)
Are EXtrusive rocks made from magma or lava? lava (molten rock that has EXited earth)
What are examples of INtrusive rocks granite
What is an example of an EXtrusive rock? obsidian, pumice(holes-floats)
What are the 2 different types of metamorphic rocks? Foliated and Non-Foliated
What does foliated mean? has layers
What does non-foliated mean? does NOT have layers
How are metamorphic rocks formed? heat and pressure
What is an example of a foliated metamorphic rock? gneiss ("nice"), slate
What is an example of a non-foliated metamorphic rock? marble, anthracite coal
How are sedimentary rocks formed? compaction and cementation
what are the 3 types of sedimentary rocks? organic, chemical and clastic (organic & chemical are considered non-clastic)
How are organic sedimentary rocks formed? once living organisms
How are clastic sedimentary rocks formed? from broken pieces of rocks
How are chemical sedimentary rocks formed? settle out of a solution
What is an example of an organic sedimentary rock? bituminous coal, coquina, chalk
What is an example of a clastic sedimentary rock? conglomerate, limestone
What is an example of a chemical sedimentary rock? rock salk, limestone
How do sedimentary and metamorphic rocks turn into igneous rock? heat and melt, then cool and harden
How are igneous rocks formed? hot, molten material cools and hardens
How do metamorphic and igneous rocks turn into sedimentary rock? weathering and erosion, then compaction and cementation
How do igneous and sedimentary rocks turn into metamorphic rock? heat and pressure
