Unit 2- Work, Energy, and Machines

Work | The use of force or mental effort. |
Energy | The ability to do work. |
Power | The rate at which work is done. |
Kinetic Energy | Energy in motion. |
Potential Energy | The energy an object has because of its position. |
Mechanical Energy | The energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position. |
Machine | Any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done. |
Mechanical Advantage | The number of times the machine multiplies the input force. |
Mechanical Efficiency | A comparison of a machine's work output with the work input. |
Lever | A simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point. |
Fulcrum | A fixed point. |
Wheel and Axle | A simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object. |
Pulley | A simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or cable. |
Inclined Plane | A simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface. |
