TermDefinition
E-mail Messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network. (Electronic Mail)
Database A database is a collection of data on a computer that is organized so that its contents can easily be accessed, managed, and updated.e.g. Microsoft Access
Word Processing Using a computer to create, edit, and print documents. Of all computer applications, word processing is the most common. To perform word processing, you need a computer, a special program called a word processor, and a printer. e.g Microsoft Word
Spreadsheet A computer program in which figures arranged in the rows and columns of a grid can be manipulated and used in calculations. e.g. Microsoft Excel
Broadband The term broadband is used to describe a type of data transmission in which a single medium (wire) can carry several channels at once. Cable TV, for example, uses broadband transmission.
Search Engine Computer program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found.
Blog A personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis.
Input Device A device that can be used to insert data into a computer There are dozens of possible input devices, but the two most common ones are a keyboard and mouse.
Output Device Electronic equipment connected to a computer and used to transfer data out of the computer in the form of text, images, sounds, or other media. Monitors and speakers are the most common output devices, as well as headphones, printers, projectors, lighting
VDU Visual Display Unit - more commonly known as the monitor. It may also be a TV, Smart Phone, or Tablet (e.g. iPad)
CPU Central Processing Unit - the "microchip" in the computer that catrries out the instructions given by the software or computer program
RAM Random Access Memory
Internet Random Access Memory - the main memory of the comouter that works when the computer is on and doing tasks
WWW – World Wide Web used at the start of every address of websites on the internet
Hardware All the physical component parts of a computer such as the keyboard, microchip, hard drive, monitor etc
Software the programme that drives the computer, that gives the instructions - e.g. word processor, game, spreadsheet
Computer Program the instructions to the computer e.g. word processor, game, spreadsheet
