What does Gracile mean? Small; lightweight; more "graceful" in appearance.
What does Robust mean? Large; heavy-boned; more "stout" in appearance. Refers to large molars and other cranial features.
What does it mean to have a Dished-Face? Forward position of the zygomatic bones give a flat/concave appearance.
Describe post-orbital constriction. Narrowing of the cranium behind the orbits.
Describe prognathism. Occurs when the maxillary region projects out from the face.
What is the sagittal crest and what is its purpose? High ridge of bone that runs along the mid-line of the skull; serves as a muscle attachment site.
What is the Nuchal crest and its purpose. Ridge of bone that runs along the occipital region of the skull; serves as a place of neck muscle attachment.
What are some generalized characteristics of the Australopithecines? Prognathic faces in comparison to modern humans, brains that were ~500 cc, valgus knee.
What are some features that indicate bipedality? Short and Bowl Shaped Pelvis, Medial Angle Femur (Valgus knee), Platform Plateau Tibia, Short foot with hallux positioned toward the midline.
When do we first start seeing bipedal fossils? 4.2 mya Australopithecus anamensis in East Africa (Tibia), 3.7 mya Australopithecus afarensis E. Africa (Pelvis), 3.7 mya bipedal footprints Laetoli, E. Africa.
What is the difference between parallel and parabolic dental shape? parallel looks very straight and parabolic is more U-shaped.
What are some characteristics of Pliocene Hominins? Small brained, small stature, ape-like creature. Also, they were facultative bipeds, meaning they still relied on suspensory locomotion.
name some of the earliest hominins Sahelanthropus tschadensis, Orrorin tugenensis, Ardipithecus ramius kadabba, Ardipithecus ramidus, Australopithecus anamensis.
What species make up the Family Hominidae? Gracile Australopithecus, Kenyanthropus, Robust Australopithecus (Paranthropus)
What specific diagnostic traits does Paranthropus and robust austrolopithecus have? Small incisors & canines, huge premolars, molars. Thick, deep, large mandible. Dietary specialist.
What diagnostic traits does gracile Australopithecus have? Broad, spatulate incisors; canines intermediate. Medium sized molars. Medium sized mandible. Dietary generalist.
