TermDefinition
Classification The grouping of objects or information based in similarities
Taxonomy Is the branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics
Archaebacteria Prokaryotes that live in harsh areas like hot springs/swamps
Eubacteria Prokaryotes with strong cell walls
Protists Eukaryotes that lack complex organ systems and live in wet areas
Fungi Uni/multicellular eukaryote that absorbs nutrients from organic matter
Plants Multicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms
Animals Multicellular heterotrophs
Binomial Nomenclature The two word naming system used for modern classification system
Genus Consists of a group of similar species
Specific Epithet The second word, which sometimes describes a characteristic of the organism
Family The next larger taxon in the biological classification system, consisting of a group of similar genera
Order A taxon of similar families
Class A taxon of similar classes
Phylum A taxon of similar classes
Division Is the plant taxonomist term for phylum
Kingdom A taxon of phyla or divisions
