Natural Selection

Predator/Prey Microevolution

QuestionAnswer
What is macroevolution? Evolution at the species level or above. Occurs over extended periods of time. Accumulation of microevolutionary events.
What is microevolution? This occurs at the population level. Changes in allele frequency, and observable.
What are the four main mechanisms of evolution? Natural selection, gene flow, genetic drifts and mutation.
Describe natural selection. A force which operates on individuals,. Selection occurs as a result of differential reproductive success. Individuals who are better adapted to their enviro. are more likely to survive and reproduce offspring. They in turn inherit the advantage.
What did Charles Darwin do? Published the Origin of Species & The Descent of Man after his voyage of the HMS Beagle. Worked alongside Alfred R. Wallace.
Example of natural selection in action. Peppered Moths in the United Kingdom. Black vs. Light coloration
How can we measure microevolution? Observe changes in population allele (genotype) frequencies. Change in trait fitness results in allele frequency changes over time.
What is a morphological variant (morph)? Phenotypic variant of the same species. Results from genetic variation.
What is co-evolution? Process in which natural selection of one organism has an impact on organisms within the same evolutionary niche. Each party in a co-evo relationship exerts selective pressures on the other.
