TermDefinition
physical property Characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the substance; Examples include color, melting point, and conductivity
density the amount of mass in a given volume
state of matter tells whether a sample of matter is a solid, liquid, or gas; depends on the temperature and pressure of the matter
melting point temperature at which a substance's state of matter changes from a solid to a liquid
boiling point temperature at which a substance's state of matter changes from a liquid to a gas
chemical property characteristic that can only be observed or measured when atoms of matter rearrange during a chemical change
reactivity how easily one thing reacts with something else
mixture substance that can be separated since it is a combination of materials
physical change any change in size, shape, form, or state where the identity of the matter stays the same
chemical reaction the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve
pure substance substance that cannot be separated since it is the same material throughout
flammability the ability of a substance to burn
synthetic material material that is made by humans
