Parts of a Cell

11/26/13

TermDefinition
cytoskeleton network of proteins, such as microtubes and microfilaments, inside a eukaryotic cell that supports and shapes the cell
vesicle small organelle that contains and transports materials within the cytoplasm
nucleus organelle comprised of a double membrane that acts as the storehouse for most of a cells DNA
nucleolus a dense region where tiny organelles essential for making proteins are assembled (inside nucleus) (makes ribosomes)
endoplasmic reticulum (rough) interconnected network of thin, folded membranes that produce, process, and distribute proteins (does have ribosomes)
ribosome organelle that links amino acids together to form proteins
centrosome a small region of cytoplasm that produces microtubes
endoplasmic reticulum (smooth) interconnected network of thin, folded membranes that produce, process, and distribute proteins (does not have ribosomes)
cell membrane double-layer of phospholipids that forms a boundary between a cell and the surrounding environment and controls the passage of materials into and out of a cell
golgi apparatus stack of flat, membrane-enclosed spaces containing enzymes that process, sort, and deliver proteins.
mitochondrion bean-shaped organelle that supplies energy to the cell and has its own ribosomes and DNA
vacuole organelle that is used to store materials, such as water, food, or enzymes, that are needed by the cell
centriole small cylinder-shaped organelle made up of protein tubes arranged in a circle; aids mitosis
lysosome organelle that contains enzymes
chloroplast organelle composed of numerous membranes that are used to convert solar energy into chemical energy, contains chlorophyll
central vacuole vacuole in the center of the cell that may contain toxins that can harm predators and products that would harm the cell itself
cell wall rigid structure that gives protection, support, and shape to cells in plants, algea, fungi, and bacteria

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
