Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) | Born near Warsaw. Compared to Mozart at age 7. Surpassed his professional teacher. Became a popular teacher. One of the greatest pianists of his time. Dies of Tuberculosis He was a promoter of polish dance. Bel Canto Pianism(making piano sing). |
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) | Born in 1803 to medical doctor. Began composition at 14. Entered paris Conservatoire. Wrote program symphonies, Romeo at Juliette, and Symphonie fantastique. He was influencial in the expansion of the orchestra. Known as the mastor orchestrator. |
Georges Bizet (1838-1875) | Born in Paris. Entered Paris Conservatoire at 9. 1867, married Genevieve. In 1873, recieved the libretto for Carmen. Died assuming Carmen was a failure. Wrote 4 Operas. Transformed opera comique into lyric opera. Brilliant pianist praised by Liszt. |
Giocomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini (1858-1924) | Born in Italy. Enrolled in Milan Conservatory, studied composition. composed the Messa de Gloria in the same year. Wrote La Boheme, Tosca, madama Butterfly, II Trittico, ect. Died of throat cancer in 1924. |
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) | Born near Paris to shopkeepers. Entered the Paris Conservatoire at 11. Became music critic of La Revue Blance. Married Emma in 1908. Died of Cnacer in 1918. Wrote Prelude to the afternoon of a faun, Pelleas et Melisande. Music had no clear Tonal centre. |
Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) | Born near Leningrad to a singer. Married cousin Catherine. Wrote Rite of Spring, pushed musical boundaries. Wrote opera, The Rake's Progress. Known for his use of rhythm intended to challenge and disturb audiences. |
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) | Born in Massachusetts. Studied at New England Conservatory, Harvard University, and Curtis Institute. Conductor of NY Philharmonic, 1943. Died of heart attack, 1990. Wrote 4 musicals. "Music is fun. Music is important" know for the Young Peoples Concerts. |
