I=PAT formula says our environmental imparcts (I) are the product of our population size (P) times affluence (A) and the technology (T) used to produce the goods and services we consume
Demography vital statistics about people; births, marriages, deaths, etc; the statistical study of human populations relating to growth rate, age structure, geographic distribution, etc and their effects on social economic, and enviro conditions
crude birth rate the number of births in a year divided by the midyear population
total fertility rate the number of children born to an average woman in a population during her entire reproductive life
zero population growth (ZPG) the number of births at which people are just replacing themselves; also called the replacement level of fertility
crude death rate the number of deaths per year in a given year; also called crude mortality rate
natural increase crude death ratesubtracted from crude birthrate
total growth rate the net rate of population growth resulting from births, deaths, immigration, and emigration
life expectancy the avg age that a newborn infant can expect to attain in a particular time and place
dependency ratio the number of noworking members compared to working members for a given population
pronatalist pressures influences that encourage people to have children
demographic transition a pattern of falling death rates and birthrates in response to improved living conditions; could be reversed in deteriorating conditions
social justice equitable access to resources and the benefits derived from them; a system that recognizesinalienable rights and adheres to what isfair, honest, and moral
family planning controlling reproduction; planning the timing of birth and having as many babies as are wanted and can be supported
birth control any method used to reduce births, including abstinence, delayed marriage, contraception; devices or meication that prevent implantation of fertilized zygotes, and induced abortions
