Science test

chapter 3 test

QuestionAnswer
definiton of states of matter the physical form in which a substance can exist
what is matter made up of? atoms and molecules
What are the charitistics of a solid? definite shape, definite volume, particles vibrate in place, have strong attraction
what are the charitistics of a liquid? shape of container, definite volume, particles move fast enough to overcome some attraction
what are the charitistics of a gas? no definite shape, no definite volume, particles have little attraction can break away
surface tension is? a force that acts on the particles at the surface of a liquid
viscosity is? a liquids resistance to flow
temperature is? a measure of how fast the particles in an object are moving
volume is? the amount of space that an object takes up
pressure is? the amount of force exerted on a given surface area. ( number of times the particles of gas hit the inside of the container)
Boyles law? for a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature the volume of the gas is inversely related to the pressure (as the pressure increases the volume decreses and vice rersal)
Charles law? for a fixed amount of gas at a constant pressure the volume of the gas changes in the same way that the temperature of the gas changes (ie- as temperature increases volume increases)
change of state? the change of a substance from one physical form to another. identity of substance does not change
Melting is.....? the change of state from a solid to a liquid. adding energy to a solid increases the temperature. when the melting point is reached the solid will melt
Melting point is a.......? physical property and changes with each substance.
endothermic change? change because energy is gained by the substance as it changes state.
freezing...... ? change of state from a liquid to a solid.
freezing point? the temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid
removing energy will?? cause particles to lock into place
evaporation....?? the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas. surface if below boiling point.
Boiling-? the change of a liquid to a vapor, or gas throughout the liquid
boiling point-? the temperature at which a liquid boils
condensation? the change of state from a gas to a liquid
condensation point-?? the temperature at which the gas becomes a liquid. energy must be removed from the gas to slow the movement of the particles. (exothmic)
sublimation-?? the change of state in which a solid changes directly into a gas(i.e. dry ice) endothermic change

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
