Composition Device

TermDefinition
Contrast To create interest by introducing a new element, or to alter an existing element (variation). The variations may involve: harmony, melody, counterpoint, rhythm, timbre (color/texture) orchestration or any combination of these.
Repetition To introduce an idea, then come back to it again. Repeat a theme, section (AB), phrase, or motif to unify your piece. Ex. Motif: DU du du du - repeated in Beethoven's 5th Phrase: AABBAABB Section: ABA
Stretto A close succession, or overlapping, of phrases with each voice entering immediately after the preceding one; overlapping imitation. The second voice will enter before the first voice finishes their first phrase. Ex. Row Your Boat, Stairs in GB
Melodic Ostinato (Riff) A short melody or pattern that is constantly repeated, usually in the same part at the same pitch. Ex. Jaws, Beetlejuice
Leitmotif A short, constantly recurring musical phrase associated with a particular person, place, or idea. A signature tune! Ex. Imperial March, Concerning Hobbits, Hedwig's Theme
Synchresis (Mickey Mousing) To match the sound to the action of the video. Ex. Cartoon Character jumps and the beat of the song matches the jumping
Call and Response A call in one voice and then an answer, or a repeat of the call, in another voice. Ex. Dueling Banjos or Indiana Jones (brass echos the theme).
