TermDefinition
Pioneer Early settlers.
Manifest Destiny The belief that the U.S. could expand across the county to the Pacific Ocean.
Transcontinental Railroad A railroad that stretches across the country.
Gold Rush A strong sudden attraction of thousands of people to an area in search of gold ex. 1849 California.
Cattle Drivers The movement of cowboys of a large herds of cattle from grazing areas to towns were they could be shipped to market.
Homestead Act A law enacted where new settlers received 160 acres of land for a small fee; they had to build a home within six months and agree to live there for five years; after that the land was theirs.
Homesteaders A settler or pioneer.
Drought A long period without rain.
Irrigation System of directing water from a source to a place that needs it.
Dry Farming Method in which farmers conserved moisture in the soil during dry weather.
Sodbusters settlers on the prairie who cut thickly rooter grass or sod to make their homes.
Tepees Homes of Native Americans made from wood and animal skins.
Reservation An area of land granter to Native Americans in exchange for their own land.
Raw Materials Natural products used in manufacturing.
Monroe Doctrine policy where President James Monroe warned European Countries not to interfere with the Western Hemisphere.
Yellow Journalisim False or exaggerated reporting of a story.
Isthmus Narrow strip of land connecting two landmasses.
Annexed To take territory and add it to a state or country.
