Atmosphere

QuestionAnswer
Identify the order of the layers starting with the layer closest to the ground. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere (ionosphere, exosphere)
What layer does weather occur? Troposphere
The stratosphere protects us from the Sun's ultraviolet rays because of the __________ _________. Ozone Layer
Why is the ionosphere important? Contains charged particles that reflect radiowave
What two layers make-up the thermosphere? Ionosphere and Exosphere
Why is the mesosphere important? Protects us from meteoroids
Which layer of the atmosphere contains satellites orbiting the Earth and merges with space? Exosphere
Identify two ways that the atmosphere makes life on Earth possible. 1. Contains gases that living things need (Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide) 2. Moves gases 3. Water Cycle 4. Provides warmth (green house gases) 5. Protects us from small meteors 6. Protects us from ultraviolet rays
78% of our atmosphere is made up of what kind of gas? Nitrogen
21% of our atmosphere is made up of what kind of gas? Oxygen
Define air pressure. the weight of air being pulled down on an area of Earth's atmosphere
Why does air have pressure? air is matter (has mass and takes up space)
What is a barometer used for? to measure air pressure
Define weather. The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place
Define climate. The average weather of a particular part of the world at different times of the year
When the altitude increases, what happens to the air around you? There is less air around you, so there is lower air pressure
When the altitude decreases, what happens to the air around you? There is more air around you, so there is a higher air pressure
What are two factors that affect air pressure? temperature and amount of air above you
What layer of the atmosphere do shuttles orbit and make the Aurora borealis possible? thermosphere
How is the atmosphere driven by the sun? Convection Currents
What are the differences in air pressure mostly caused by? unequal heating of earth
Low air pressure usually indicates what kind of weather? stormy weather
High air pressure usually indicates what kind of weather? clear or sunny weather
Explain how convection currents work? When a fluid is heated, the fluid becomes warm, less dense, and rises. Then, the fluid begins to cool, become denser, and sink. This process continues.
Why are the waters near the equator warm? more direct sunlight
Are the waters near the poles more dense or less dense? Why? How are they moving? The water is cold and more dense, which causes the water to sink towards the equator
How does air move? Air moves from high pressure to low pressure
Define isobar. A line on a weather map that joins places that have the same air pressure
Without the atmosphere, the following would NOT be possible: smell, taste, sound, and combustion.
