8th Energy Resources

8th grade unit vocabulary about various energy resources

TermDefinition
Renewable Resources any natural resource (such as wood or solar energy) that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time
Nonrenewable resources Minerals, fossil fuels, uranium and other materials present in essentially fixed amounts (within human time scales) in our environment.
Geothermal energy Hot rocks underground heat water to produce steam. We drill holes down to the hot region, steam comes up, is purified and used to drive turbines, which drive electric generators
Fossil Fuels Coal, Oil & Gas, they have been formed from the fossilized remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
Solar Power harvesting the sun's energy to make electricity
Transfer of Energy Energy can change forms: light, chemical, mechanical, etc.
Photovoltaic cells convert light directly into electricity (other name solar cells)
Solar cells convert light directly into electricity (other name photovoltaic cells)
Solar Reflectors mirrors used to concentrate solar energy for industrial use and for the generation of electric energy
Nuclear Energy generated using Uranium, produces huge amounts of energy from small amounts of fuel
Wind Energy harvested by building a tall tower, with a large propellor that generates electricity. Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere.
Hydroelectricity Water is allowed to flow through tunnels in the dam, to turn turbines and thus drive generators
Biomass Plant and animal waste is used to produce fuels such as methanol, natural gas and oil.
Tidal energy a huge dame (called a Barrage) is built across a river estuary. When the tide goes in and out, the water flows through the tunnels in the dam and turns turbines that produce electricity
1st Law of thermodynamics the total amount of energy in the universe is constant. all of the energy has to end up somewhere, either in the original form or in a different from. the amount of energy in a system, the amount lost as waste heat, and the efficiency of the system.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
