Culture implicit agreement of “should” and “oughts” for life; not just nations are cultures: gender, age, religion, region of country, etc. can all have their own cultures
Interdependency globalization has increased it between countries and people in those countries….a crash in the US affects investments in South Africa and then affects China in its need for resources…etc. Managerial choices can have unforeseen repercussions.
Variety workforces are more diverse, with modern media and technology: consumers are more diverse, and competitors are more diverse
Ambiguity clack of clarity; interconnectedness makes it harder to see cause-effect relationships; more information but reliability isn’t always clear
Fast flux complex environment is always changing, interdependence today will be different tomorrow; decisions made yesterday may not be ideal for today or tomorrow; rapid unpredictable change in many directions
Hercules meets Buddha how to manage this level of complexity: managers simplify a few key control processes (organizational structure, company values, goals & strategies, some key performance indicators) they can let go and empower people to manage complexity
International perspective focuses on 2 or a few countries at a time and relatively straightforward interactions between them
Global perspective looks at the whole world at once and does not see national boarders as being contiguous with business boarders
Management coordinating, decision-making, organizing and controlling aspects of a manager’s job
Leadership visioning and direction-setting, motivating, aligning, and empowering people
Schemas influence what we notice and what meaning we attribute to perceptions and guide the actions in the world around us. Changes through: assimilation or accommodation
