succession | process of succeeding or coming after someone |
executive orders | formal signed statements from president that instruct or guide executive officials and have force of law |
executive privilege | power that allows president to refuse to release information to Congress or court |
diplomatic recognition | presidential power to formally recognize legitimacy of foreign government |
reprieve | postponement in carrying out of prison sentence |
pardon | official act by president or governor forgiving person convicted of a crime and freeing that person from serving out his or her sentence |
amnesty | general pardon for offenses committed by group of offenders |
commute | to reduce a person's sentence |
administration | group of people who work for executive branch under the president |
Executive Office of the President | group of advisers and assistants to the president |
White House Office Chief of Staff | key assistants and deputy assistants to president that handle much of daily business in the White House |
National Security Council | group of top military foreign affairs and intelligence officials in president's administration that focuses on U.S. national security |
Council of Economic Advisers | group of advisers charged with providing president with expert analysis of economy and to also assist informing economic policy |
Office of Management and Budget | organizations set up to develop and implement federal budget, legislation, government regulations, management of government finances and purchase of goods, services, and property for entire government |
executive departments | agencies of federal government responsible for carrying out laws, administering programs, and making regulations in their particular area of responsibility |
