What does macaronic mean? A bilingual song, some parts in English and some parts in Irish.
What is a love song/geantrai? Songs that tells of love, some may have a theme of loss alos. Ex- 'Una bhan'
What are working songs? Lively songs with a rhythm that matches the physical actions of the work. Made up of verse and chorus, some nonsense words such as fa la la. Ex 'Ding dong dedero'
What are laments/goltrai? Usually sad, expressive songs about loss, through death, emigration, eviction, tragedy, military defeat. Ex ' An Chead Mhairt dFhomhar'
What are religious songs and carols? There are very few of these songs around due to the penal laws which tried to prevent Catholics from practicing their religion. Ex' The Wexford Carol'
What are patriotic songs/ aislingi? The aisling is a type of patriotic song based on an 18th century Irish poem. The poet has a vision of a beautiful woman who represents Ireland. She fills him with a desire to fight for his country. Ex' Taimse im chodladh'
What are dandling songs? Childrens play songs which would be sung to a child whilst being bounced on ones knees. Ex 'Dillin o deamhas'
What are lullabies/suantrai? Gentle soothing songs with a rocking rhythm to rock a baby to sleep. Ex 'Einini'
