Branches of Earth Science - Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Geology The study of the origin, history, and structure of the Earth and the processes that shape the Earth.
Oceanography The scientific study of the sea.
Meteorology The study of the Earth's atmosphere, especially in relation to weather and climate
Astronomy The study of the universe
Environmental Science The study of how humans interact with the environment
Ecology The study of communities of organisms and their non-living environment
Geochemistry Combines the studies of geology and chemistry
Geography The study of the Earth's surface features
Cartography Making maps of Earth's surface features
Volcanologist A geologist who studies volcanoes
Seismologist A geologist who studies earthquakes
Paleontologist A geologist who studies fossils
Physical oceanographer An oceanographer that studies waves and ocean currents to see how they affect weather patterns and aquatic life
Biological oceanographer An oceanographer that studies plant and animals that live in the ocean
Geological oceanographer An oceanographer that studies the ocean floor for clues about Earth's history
Chemical oceanographer An oceanographer that studies amounts and distributions of natural and human-made chemicals in the ocean
