1866 Klu Klux Klan was founded
1869 Beginnings of an inter-connected nation. Trans continental railroad is completed. America starts to industrialize. Rutgers beats Princeton- first college football game.
1870 Rockefeller- standard oil. Industrialization. Monopoly- eventually government is going to have to come in and break Rockefeller.
1872-4 Great buffalo slaughter. Approx 9 mill buffalo were killed, white guys kill what gets in there way- buffalo.
1873 Andrew Carnegie- steel. Controlled steel mines, and metal.
1876 Alexander Gram Belle- Telephone. First phone call – NY to Boston. Central park established- place of relief (urban planning).
1879 Major league baseball formed. Became more national. Edison- light bulb.
1883 Brooklyn Bridge- Urban/tech wonder, put together a picture of a country.
1886 Afl- American Federation of labor---labor union. Violence in Chicago -> labor movement. Statue of Liberty.
1890 Susan B. Anthony – established national American woman suffrage association – voting. Beginning of women’s movement. – legal battle for equality
1896 Plessy vs Furgeson ->separate but equal, legal battle for equality
1899 Coca Cola - industrialize
1903 Right brothers – first in flight – urban existence
1906 Beginnings of FDA- larger federal government
1914 Dawn of Modernism. WWI starts when the Black Hand, assassinates archduke Fraz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne to prevent the union of Serbian states.
1918 WWI ends and the League of Nations is created to prevent future wars and protect the people. It initially fails.
1920 18th amendment: (prohibition) Alcohol is outlawed. - 19th amendment: women’s voting rights
1924 National Origins Act limits the max number of Asian immigrants to 2% of the stats from 1890
1925 The Scopes Trial – Teacher in TN teaches his class about evolution, ends up losing court case bc considered “hearsay”
1929 Stock market crashes on Black Tuesday
1930 Dust ball. Breadbasket of America-> decade drought. Thousands of families migrate to cali. Huge growth in vehicles (especially farm equipment)
1932 FDA-federal deposit insurance corp. Gov insured money as an effort to bring back the banks and have the people build up trust and use them. 2,000 veterans die on a march when Hoover called “The general” and kill them.
1933 New president- Roosevelt (people realized Hoover = joke) “New Deal” – social security, FDIC, end to prohibition, government projects.
1934 SEC – securities exchange commission -> stocks. Make sure no crashes.
1938 “New Deal” ends, Federal Government gained power
1941 December 7 – Japan attacks pearl harbor..2400 soldiers die-> enter WW2
1944 Roosevelt is elected for the 4th time
1945 U.S. drops atomic bomb on 2 Japanese cities -> Hiroshima (where they make weapons of war) and Nagasaki = Japan surrenders=WWII ends. League of Nations to prevent more world wars. Catcher and the Rye.
1947 Truman Doctrine. Cold war btwn US and Soviet Union. Beginning of “space race”, “Olympic race”, and “arms race”. Mass production which led to postwar suburbia -> Levittown.
1949 NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organizations) which was a huge, military multinational alliance w/ different countries. Death of a Salesman
1950 Americans get involved in Korean War; General MacArthur is fired; communist and UN forces make peace
1954 Red scare – communism fear would call out people in Hollywood and Jews as communists
1955 Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama: bus boycott leads to segregation in transportation illegal.
1957 Sputnik- Soviet Union sends satellite to space (winning space race)
1961 Berlin Wall – people want postwar bliss in West Germany, so they blocked the east from the west
1962 Cuban Missile Crisis – Russia set up missiles in Cuba: Kennedy set up an embargo and Russia turned around
1963 JFK is assassinated: end of postwar era
