What was the Holocaust? The systematic murder of 12 million people by Hitler during WWII
What is a strike? As a way of protest when workers are mistreated by owners or employers they can express their grievances and demand rights
What is imperialism? European countries created empires for military and trade advantages, by taking land in Africa and Asia for colonies
What is militarism? The maintenance of military power and the fascination with war and the military
Why did the Nazi Party become the largest party in Germany's government? They promised social security and economic prosperity
What is Mikhail Gorbachev associated with? perestroika, glastnost, and change

Why did Hitler censor the Jews? he didn't want to promote Jewish views
How did European colonialism in the late 19th century create competition among countries? They competed for raw materials, a market for their products, and cheap labor
What were the four MAIN causes of WWI? Militarism, alliances, imperialism, nationalism (MAIN)
What is nationalism? love of one's country
What ways was Germany punished at the end of WWI by the Treaty of Versailles? Germany was stripped of one-sixth of its territory and had to pay reparations. It also lost its war ships and trade ships and could no longer keep a large army or navy.

What was the result of the Russian Revolution? the government changed from a Czar (absolute monarchy) to Communism

Why did the Holocaust most likely occur? The Jews were blamed for Germany's economic problems and the Nazis wanted Germans to be the only race in Germany.
What is perestroika? Mikhail Gorbachev was leader of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. His program of “perestroika” was (“restructuring”)of economy. This meant he overhauled the communist party members and relied on market forces.
What is glasnost? Gorbachev introduced “glasnost” or (“openness”) with the Soviet Union's economy. This meant Gorbachev gave greater freedom to the media and religious groups. People could now voice their opinions without fear.
What ended the Cold War? Because of Gorbachev introducing perestroika and glastnost, the old ways of communism ended which led to an elected government.
