Chemical Reactions

chemical reaction The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
reactant A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
product A substance produced during a chemical reaction
chemical equation a shorthand form of showing the products and reactants in a chemical reaction
endothermic reaction reactions that absorb thermal energy (heat)
exothermic reaction reactions that release thermal energy (heat)
activation energy minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction
rate of reaction tells how fast a reaction occurs
concentration the amount of substance in a certain volume
atom the smallest particle of an element, made of neutrons, protons, and electrons
chemical process Method or means of changing one or more chemicals or chemical compounds
molecule The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist; formed when two or more atoms join together chemically
precipitate A solid that is deposited from a solution
properties Physical and chemical characteristics of matter used to describe or identify a substance
compound A new substance with unique chemical and physical properties formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded during a chemical reaction
