Chapter 3: Chemistry
Calculations With Chemical Formulas and Equations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
What is Molecular Mass ( Molecular Weight)? | Molecular Mass (Molecular Weight) is the weight of ALL the atoms in a molecule. Ex. The molecular Mass of H2O is 18.0 amu because 2*1.0 is from 2 atoms of hydrogen + 16.0 amu from 1 atom of Oxygen atom. |
What is a Mole? | A mole is the quantity of a given substance that contains as many molecules or formula units as the number of atoms exactly 12g of Carbon-12. |
What is Avogadro Number? | The number that tells the number of atoms in a sample. For ex. 1 mole of a ethanol contains 6.02 * 10*23 ethanol molecules. |
What is molar Mass? | Molar Mass is the mass of one mole of the substance. Ex. Carbo-12 has a molar mass of exactly 12g/mole. |
How to determine a newly found compound? | 1st find the chemical formula by mass percentage. |
What are the steps to converting moles of a substance to grams? | Use what you are given as moles than convert to grams. |
How do you calculate the number of molecules in a given mass? cal. 3.46 g. of HCl to molecules. | First you will start with grams than moles-than- molecules using Avogadro number. |
