What was the significance of Shays' Rebellion? It showed Americans the weaknesses of the Confederation government.
Under the Articles of Confederation which was more powerful... the states or the national government? the states
Why was the phrase "taxation without representation" so important to the revolutionary cause? Colonists did not wish to support a government in which they had no voice.
What promise did Congress have to make in order to gain support for ratifying the Constitution? add a bill protecting individual rights
What dispute did the Great Compromise solve? How did it resolve this problem? The Great Compromise solved the debate over how representation would be determined in Congress by creating a bicameral legislature. Population of a state would determine representation in one house while representation would be equal in the other.
What is the Bill of Rights? a document added to the Constitution to protect the rights of individual citizens
What is economic interdependence? when two or more countries rely on each other economically.
How did the Declaration of Independence raise questions about slavery? the message of freedom in the Declaration of Independence was inconsistant with the practice of slavery
What group was the only group to be allowed suffrage under many state constitutions and later in the Constitution of the United States? White men who paid taxes (property taxes)
Why was the winter at Valley Forge such a difficult time for the Continental Army? The army lacked protection from the cold and supplies
What are some rights listed in the Declaration of Independence? Life, liberty and the persuit of happiness
Where did Patrick Henry deliver his famous "Give Me Liberty or Give me Death" speech? In a meeting of the Virginia House of Burgesses after the First Continental Congress
What group was being harrassed by the patriots for their loyalties during the American Revolution? The Loyalists. They were Colonists who remained Loyal to Britain. Many fled the colonies during the Revolution.
Why is the U.S. Constituiton survived for more than 200 years? the flexability of the Constitution to meet the needs of a changing nation.
How did Britain respond to the Boston Tea Party? By passing the Coercive Acts(Intolerable Acts) and closing Boston Harbor.
Who were the Federalists? Americans who believed the nation's central government need to be stronger. They supported the new Constitution.
Why did colonists want to settle the Ohio River Valley? The area was rich in fertile soil, forests, and wild animals
What law set the process for a territory to become a state? the Northwest Ordinance of 1787
What effect did Thomas Paine's pamphlet, Common Sense, have on colonial leaders? it inspired them to challenge British authority
Who were the Antifederalists? Colonists who disagreed with the new Constitution because they feared it gave the central government too much power.

What was the three-fifths compromise? a compromise made during the constitutional convention that allowed 3/5 of a state's slave population to be counted toward representation in Congress

What is a boycott? to protest by refusing to purchase goods
Who were the sons of Liberty? a group of patriots who protested British laws
