Integer Op. Rules

Rules for doing the different integer operations

Add two positive integers Add the numbers and the result is positive

Add opposite integers The sum will always be 0
Add a positive integer and 0 The sum will be the same positive integer
Add a negative integer and 0 The sum will be the same negative integer
Subtract a positive integer minus a smaller positive integer This is the same as adding a positive integer and a smaller negative integer. Subtract the numbers and the result will be positive.
Subtract a positive integer minus a larger positive integer This is the same as adding a positive integer and a "larger" negative integer. Subtract the numbers and the result will be negative.
Subtract a positive integer minus a negative integer This is the same as adding a positive integer and a positive integer. Add the numbers and the result will be positive.
Subtract a negative integer minus a positive integer The is the same as adding two negative integers. Add the numbers and the result will be negative.
Subtract a negative integer minus a negative integer This is the same as adding a negative integer and a positive integer. Subtract the numbers and use the sign of the bigger* number (the number with the larger absolute value

Multiply a negative integer by a positive integer Multiply the two numbers and the result (product) will be negative. (it doesn't matter if the "bigger" number is positive or negative)
Multiply a negative integer by a negative integer Multiply the numbers and the result (product) will be positive.
Multiply a positive or a negative integer by 0 The product will always be 0
Divide a positive integer by a positive integer Divide the numbers and the result (quotient) will by positive.
Divide a positive integer by a negative integer Divide the two numbers and the result (quotient) will be negative.
Divide a negative integer by a positive integer Divide the two numbers and the result (quotient) will be negative.
Divide a negative integer by a negative integer Divide the two numbers and the result (quotient) will be positive.
Divide 0 by any integer The quotient will be 0.
Divide any integer by 0 This cannot be done. The quotient is said to be "undefined".
