Color Terms

QuestionAnswer
What is color? Color is an element of design.
How is color perceived? Color occurs when light in different wavelengths strikes our eyes. Colors appear different depending on the lighting; incandescent, florescent, or natural sunlight.
What is hue? Hue is the color itself. Each different hue is a different reflected wavelength of light.
What are the primary colors? Red, Blue, Yellow
What are the secondary colors? Violet, Green, Orange
What are tertiary colors? when you mix equal parts of one primary and one secondary color you achieve these colors
What are primary colors? The three basic colors that are used to create all of the other colors are known as the primary colors.
What are secondary colors? the three colors that are achieved from equal parts of two primary colors make up what we call the secondary colors.
What is a tint? A tint is a saturated color that is mixed with pure white color
What is a shade? A shade is a saturated color that is mixed with pure black color.
What are the warm colors? Red, orange, yellow
What are the cool colors? Blue, green, violet
What are the neutral colors? black, grey, white, brown, and tan
What is a monochromatic color harmony and give one example? A monochromatic color harmony is when you use different tints and shades of the same color. For example, baby blue, bright blue, and navy blue.
What is an analogous color harmony and give one example? An analogous color harmony occurs when there are three or more colors that are right next to one another of the color wheel. For example, violet, red violet, and red.
What is complementary color harmony and give an example? A complementary color harmony is when you use colors directly across from each other on the color wheel. For example, violet and yellow.
What is triadic color harmony and give an example? When you use three equally distanced colors on the color wheel. For example, blue, red and, yellow.
What is split complementary and give an example? Split complementary is when you uses any color and the two colors located next to that color's complement. For example, yellow, red-violet, and blue-violet.
What is neutral color harmony? Any combination of blacks, greys, whites, browns, and tans
What is accented neutral? Accented neutral-has a small splash of color
What is double complementary? 2 complementary colors. For example, blue and orange and yellow and violet.
