Geosphere solid part of the earth that consists of all rock, as well as the soils and and loose rocks on earths surface
crust earths thin outer layer
mantle the layer beneath the crust, made up of rock of medium density
core earths inner most layer
lithosphere earths outer layer, cool rigid layer
asthenosphere layer beneath the lithosphere, solid layer of the mantle made of rock that flows very slowly and allows tectonic plates to move
tectonic plate the outer most layer of earth divided divided into seperate pieces that move seperatly
erosion the removal and transport of surface material
atmosphere mixture of gases that surround earth
troposphere the atmospheric layer nearest earths surface
stratosphere the layer of the atmosphere that lies between te troposphere and the mesophere
ozone is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms
radiation the transfer of energy across space and in the atmosphere
conduction is the flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the objects are placed in direcy physical contact
convection is the transfer of heat by air currents.
greenhouse effect gases trap heat near the Earth
water cycle The continuous movement of water into the air
evaporation is the process by which liquid water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor
condensation water vapor forms water droplets on dust particles
precipitation 1.rain, snow, or hail: rain, snow, or hail, all of which are formed by condensation of moisture in the atmosphere and fall to the ground
salinity the total quantity of dissolved salts
fresh water little more than 2 percent of all the water on Earth is fresh water
biosphere as the narrow layer around Earth's surface in which life can exist
closed system energy enters the environment, but matter does not
open system both matter and energy are exchanged between a system and the surrounding environment
