Hajj Pilgrimage
Duty work that a Muslim is obliged to perform for religious reasons.
Five Pillars The term given to the five duties incumbent on every Muslim.
Muslim character, ideal The attributes that determine a Muslims moral and ethical actions and reactions.
Muslim One who has submitted to the will of Allah and has accepted Islam.
Pillar A duty( one of five) incumbent on every Muslim.
Salah The second pillar of Islam; Prayer, a prescribed liturgy performed five times a day( preferable in a mosque) and towards Makkah.
Sawm The third pillar of Islam; fasting( primarily during the month of Ramadan). Muslims abstain from food, drink, gambling and sensuous pleasures from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan.
Shahadah The first pillar of Islam and an affirmation of faith.
Sunnah The normal way of life as prescribed for Muslims on the basis of the teachings and practices of Muhammad and interpretations of the Qur'an.
Umma The brotherhood and sisterhood of Islam. The Islamic community.
Worship Showing devotion to God in the act of worshipping.
Zakah Islamic tax that goes to charity, obligatory for all Muslims, set traditionally at 2.5% of a Muslims income and capital. The fourth pillar of Islam; aims giving as an act of worship.
