Chapter 2 Properties of Matter

pure substance matter that always has exactly the same composition
element a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
atom the smallest particle of an element
compound a substance that is made from two or more simpler substances
heterogeneous mixture a mixture where the parts are noticeably different from one another
mixture the combination of two substances
homogeneous mixture a mixture where it is difficult to tell one substance in the mixture from another because
solution a homogeneous mixture that does not separate after it dissolves
suspension a heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time
colloid a mixture of medium sized substances that does NOT separate into layers over time
physical property a characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured
viscosity resistance in a liquid that keeps it from flowing
conductivity A material's ability to allow heat to flow
malleability the ability of a solid to be hammered without shattering
melting point the temperature at which a substance changes from solid to liquid
boiling point the temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas
filtration a process to separate two substances by size
distillation a process that separates substances in a solution based on their boiling points
physical change when properties of a material change, but the substances in the material remain the same
