compound | a substance that is made from two or more simpler substances |
heterogeneous mixture | a mixture where the parts are noticeably different from one another |
mixture | the combination of two substances |
homogeneous mixture | a mixture where it is difficult to tell one substance in the mixture from another because |
solution | a homogeneous mixture that does not separate after it dissolves |
suspension | a heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time |
colloid | a mixture of medium sized substances that does NOT separate into layers over time |
physical property | a characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured |
viscosity | resistance in a liquid that keeps it from flowing |
conductivity | A material's ability to allow heat to flow |
malleability | the ability of a solid to be hammered without shattering |
melting point | the temperature at which a substance changes from solid to liquid |
boiling point | the temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas |
filtration | a process to separate two substances by size |
distillation | a process that separates substances in a solution based on their boiling points |
physical change | when properties of a material change, but the substances in the material remain the same |
