Anatomical Terms

directional terms, body planes, & abdominal regions

TermDefinition
sagittal plane divides the body into right and left parts
midsagittal plane divides the body into equal right and left parts
distal farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
deep away from the body surface
abdominal ventral cavity subdivision has no bony protection
superficial toward the body surface
proximal close to the origin of body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
medial toward the midline
lateral away from the midline
thoracic superior cavity i superior cavity in the ventral cavity.
hypochondriac This right and left region flank the epigastric region and contain the lower ribs.
diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity
cranial and spinal cavities makes up the dorsal cavity
frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior sections
transverse plane divides the body into superior and inferior sections
transverse plane also called the cross horizontal plane
frontal plane also called the coronal plane
Right Hypochondriac Top right region of the abdomen
Epigastric Top middle region of the abdomen
left Hypochondriac Left Upper Region of the abdomen
Right Lumbar middle right region of the abdomen
Umbilical Middle section of abdomen
Left Lumbar Middle left region of the abdomen
right iliac Bottom right region of the abdomen
Hypogastric Bottom center region of the abdomen
Left iliac Bottom left region
caudal toward the tail
superior above
inferior below
anterior front
posterior behind
posterior toward the back
anterior toward the front
cranial toward the head
dorsal also means posterior
ventral on the belly
thoracic superior cavity of ventral cavity
cranial superior cavity of dorsal cavity
pelvic inferior cavity of ventral cavity
