poetry quiz 1

versification

QuestionAnswer
epic a long narrative poem extending to several books, on a great and serious subject.
dramatic poetry, monologue, dialogue, written in the voice of a character assumed by the poet.
lyric a short poem in the voice of a single speaker, althouth the speaker may quote others. originally a song performed in greace to the accompaniment of a harp like instrument called the lyre.
rhythm sequence of syllables with either heavier/lighter stresses
scansion the act of scanning a line to determine its division into metrical feet
caesura double line indicating a natural pause
meter the rhythm of a poem is structured into a recurrence of regular units
accentual meter strong stress meter. a line divided in two by a heavy caesura, each dominated by the two strongly stressed syllables.
alliteration the repetition of speech sounds in a sequence of near by words.
accentual-syllabic meter basic unit was the foot, a combo of 2 or 3 stressed or unstressed syllables.
iambic unstressed syllable followed by a stressed
trochaic a stressed followed by an unstressed syllable
anapestic 2 unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable.
dactylic stressed followed by 2 unstressed syllables.
rising meter iambs, and anapests which have a strong stress on the last syllable
falling meter trochees and dactyls which end in an unstressed syllable.
spondiac 2 successive strong stressed syllables.
pyrrhic 2 successive unstressed or lightly stressed syllables.
monometer one complete foot
dimeter consists of 2 complete feet
trimeter consists of 3 complete feet
tetrameter consists of 4 complete feet
pentameter consists of 5 complete feet
hexameter consists of 6 complete feet
