Equator the line of latitude that divides the world into the northern and southern hemispheres
Prime Meridian the line of longitude that divides the world into the eastern and western hemispheres
GIS geographic information system
GPS global positioning system that is used to find absolute location
GOES geostationary operational environmental satellites that are used to take pictures of weather patterns
Landsat satellites that are used to map the earth
Cartographer a mapmaker
Map projection a way of drawing a map in order to lessen distortion
Globe a three dimensional model of the earth
Map a two dimensional graphical representation of the earth
Cartogram a map based on one specific type of data
Thematic Map a map that shows an overall theme
Political Map map that shows human made features such as nations and cities
Physical Map a map that shows elevation and landforms
Mental Map a map in your head that is used for daily activities
Legend a box that tells you what the information on a map means
Latitude/Parallel Imaginary lines that are used to measure distance north or south of the Equator.
Longitude/Meridian Imaginary lines that are used to measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Cardinal Direction north, south, east, west
Intermediate Direction northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest
