Chapter 1 Earth Science vocabulary

astronomy the study of objects beyond Earth's atmosphere
meteorology the study of the forces and processes that cause the atmosphere to change and produce weather
oceanography the study of Earth's oceans, which cover nearly three-fourths of the planet
environmental science the study of interactions of organisms and their surroundings
geosphere the area from the surface of Earth down to its center
atmosphere the blanket of gases that surrounds our planet
hydrosphere all the water on Earth, including the water in the atmosphere.
biosphere includes all organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live.
scientific methods a series of problem-solving procedures that help scientists conduct experiments
hypothesis a testable explanation of a situation that can be supported or disproved by careful procedures
independent variable the factor that is changed by the experimenter
dependent variable the factor affected by changes in the independent variable
control used to show that the results of the experiment are a result of the condition being tested
Le Systeme International d'United (SI) a modern version of the metric system
scientific notation when a number is expressed as a value between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10
scientific model an idea picture a system, or a mathematical expression that reps the concept being explained.
scientific theory an explanation based on many observations during repeated investigations.
scientific law a principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon.
geology study of materials that make up earth, the processes that form and change these materials, and the history of the planet and its life forms since its origin
