TermDefinition
Science a way of learning about natuarl world
observing using one or more of your senses to gather information
inferring when you explain or interpret the things you observe
scientific attitude curiosity,creativity,honesty,open-mindness,skepitism
scientific inquiry the many ways in which scientist study the natural world & propose explanations based on the evidence
posing questions may come from observations & interferences that make you, or just from curiosity
hypothesis a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question. It must be testable.
controlled experiment a test of hypothesis under conditions established by scientist. The scientist determine how a particular variable effects the outcome of the experiment.
variable one of the factors that can change an experiment
manipulative variable the variable that scientist change
theory a well tested scientific concept that explains the wide range of observations
law a statement that describes what scientist expect to happen every time, under a particular set of conditions.ex: law of gravity
earth science the term for this knowledge about the earth and its place in the universe
lithosphere the earth's solid rocky outer layer
hydrosphere earth's ocean, lakes, rivers, and ice
atmosphere the mixture of gases that surrounds the planet
biosphere all living things
energy the availability to do work or cause change for example: in the water cycle water moves from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the oceans
constructive forces forces that shape the earth's surface by building up mountains and land masses
destructive forces forces slowly wear away and every other features on the earth
geology the study of solid earth.
geologist They study the forces that shape the earth throughout its long history. They study the physical and chemical characteristics of rock and the materials that forms earth's hard surface. They describe features sculpted in rock and soil by water wind and w
Oceanography the study of earth's oceans
oceanographer They study everything from the chemistry of the ocean water to the shape of the ocean floor to the living things in the ocean depths. Scientists in related fields study earth's fresh water in lakes, rivers and glaciers and beneath.
meteorology the study of earth's atmosphere
meteorologist they do much more than forecast weather. They are scientist who gather information about the conditions in the earth's atmosphere from around the world. Scientist in related fields study the forces that change earth's climate.
astronomy the study of the universe beyond earth
astronomers Scientist who focus on the solar system. observe stars and galaxies in the effort to understand the universe and its history
environmental science the study of earth's environment
environmental scientist Scientist that work together to determine the effect of the human activities on earth's land, air, water and living things. Then they try to solve problems such as pollution which results from the use of resources.
Why do scientist use models to study the earth? Making models helps people study and understand things that are complex and can't be observed quickly. Earth Scientist often use models to represent complex objects or processes. Ex. the hurricane weather model that projects the path of a hurricane
system a group of parts that work together as a whole a change in one part of earth's system effects all other parts.
