Lesson 1: Using Variables, Exponents, and Order of Operations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Variable | a symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value |
Coefficient | a number multiplied to a variable or exponent, ex. 3 is the coefficient of 3x. |
Factors | quantities being multiplied |
Quantity | anything that can be measured or counted |
Exponent | a symbol (number) that indicates the number of times the based is used as a factor (a base is multiplied) |
Simplify | write a mathematical expression in its simplest form (without solving in terms of variables) |
Evaluate | to find the value of an expression |
Expression | a numerical sentence that consists of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations |
Formula | an expression used to calculate a desired result |
