Lecture Notes - Eye, Ear and Skin

The skin is: largest & one of most important organs of the body
The 3 structures of the skin are: -Epidermis -Dermis -Subcutaneous
Epidermis: outermost layer of skin
Dermis: largely made of connective tissue & network of nerves & nerve-endings
Subcutaneous: loose connective tissue & fat; the fat insulates body from heat & cold
Stratum germinativum: innermost layer where cells reproduce
Stratum corneum: outer layer of epidermis, produces keratin, which is waterproof, provides cells with abrasion-resistance & protective quality
Accessory structures of the skin are: 1. Hair 2.Nails 3.Skin glands
Functions of the skin: 1.Protect 2.Temp regulate 3.Sense organ activity
The Sclera: white of eye
Choroid: middle layer of eye; contains dark pigment to prevent scattering of light rays
The Retina: innermost layer of eye; contains rods & cones
Accessory structures of the eye: 1.Cornea 2.Iris 3.Pupil 4.Lens
The Cornea: on front surface of sclera(white) AKA window of eye b/c of transparency
The Iris: colored part of eye
The Pupil: black center of iris
The Lens: directly behind pupil
The "blind spot" is known as: optic disc
The ear is divided into: 1.External ear 2.Middle ear 3.Inner ear
External ear: (2 parts)auricle/pinna & external auditory canal
Middle ear: tiny & thin cavity hollowed out of temporal bone
The organ of Corti is: organ for hearing; lies in the "snail" cochlea
An ear disorder: hearing loss
An eye disorder: astigmatism
A skin disorder: psoriasis
