TermDefinition
Anemometer An instrument for measuring the force or speed of the wind
Barometer An instrument for measuring the amount of atmospheric pressure
Cold Front Forms at the surface of Earth when a cold, dry air mass overtakes a warmer, humid air mass
Psychrometer An instrument for measuring the water vapor in the atmosphere by means of the difference in the readings of two thermometers when one of them is kept wet so that it is cooled by evaporation
Humidity Amount of water vapor (gas phase of water) present in the air
Meteorologist Specialist who studies the science of Earth's atmosphere and the causes of weather conditions
Thermal Energy Energy radiated by hot objects such as the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation
Warm Front Forms at the surface of Earth when a warm, moist air mass overtakes a cool, dense, and dryer air mass
Weather The day-to-day state of the atmosphere
Air Pressure Atmospheric air pressure is the force exerted on Earth's surface by the weight of the air above the surface
Climate Average weather conditon of a region year after year
Hurricane large, tropical weather system consisting of an extreme low pressure air mass with heavy rains and wind speeds of at least 119 km/h
Local WInd Winds blowing over short distances caused by unequal heating of the earths surface in a small area
Global Wind Winds blowing over entire planet
Wind A natural movement of air sometimes with considerable force from an area of high density and pressure to an area of low density and pressure
Atmosphere The whole mass of air surrounding Earth made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and other trace gases, held by gravity
Coriolis Effect The apparent deflection of moving air, as see by an observer on Earth; apparent deflection is a result of Earth's rotation
High Air Pressure System An air mass with greater atmospheric pressure the surrounding air masses; air moves away from the high pressure, traveling in a clockwise direction
Land Breeze A breeze blowing toward the sea from the land
Low Air Pressure System An air mass with less atmospheric pressure than the surrounding air masses; air moves toward the low pressure, traveling in a counterclockwise direction
Ocean Current A directional movement of ocean water; surface currents result from steady winds over the ocean surface; deep currents result from density variations due to temperature and salinity differences
Sea Breeze A cooling daytime breeze blowing inland from the sea
Weather Systems The state of the atmosphere as measured on a scale of hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or storm, clear or cloudy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
