Bulk forming agents aka stool softeners | MOA: from fibers that are hydrophilic colloids that attract H2O = form gels in colon that serve to retain H2O = soften stool & distend intestine = yields increased peristalsis (mild) |
Senna | MOA:irritant contains emodin which stimulates colonic activity;ADRs:emodin may pass into the breast milk |
Castor oil | MOA:irritant broken down to ricinoleic acid=very irritating to gut and causes an increase in peristalsis |
Mg salt | MOA: non-absorbable saline that draws water into the intestine via osmosis causing significant bowel distention w/ H2O accumulation = increased peristalsis & fluid content; defecation usually occurs w/in an hr |
Mineral oil | MOA: lubricant becomes emulsified w/ stool producing a softer stool that passes more easily = stool softener |
