Common weather terms

cumulus clouds puffy white clouds; indicate good weather
stratus clouds clouds that form in layers; cover large areas of the sky and block out the sun
cirrus clouds thin, feathery, white clouds found high in the sky; formed by strong winds
fog stratus clouds that form near the ground
cirro- prefix used to describe clouds that form at high altitudes
alto- prefix used to describe clouds that form at middle altitudes
-nimbus suffix used to describe clouds that are likely to bring precipitation like rain or snow
tornado a destructive, rotating column of air that has very high wind speeds with a funnel cloud that touches the ground
hurricane a severe, rotating storm that forms over tropical oceans
atmosphere the mixture of gases that surround Earth
air pressure a measure of the force which molecules push against objects on Earth; increases and decreases indicate weather changes
greenhouse effect the warming of Earth due to gases such as carbon dioxide & methane which absorb heat and radiate it back to Earth
global warming a gradual increase in the average global temperature
air pollution contamination of the atmosphere by caused by human-made or natural pollutants
weather balloons carry equipment into the atmosphere where special instruments like thermometers and barometers gather weather data
thermometer an instrument used to measure temperature
barometer an instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure
anemometer an instrument used to measure wind speed
