Digestive System Organs and processes

Mechanical Digestion The physical breaking apart of food. For example by the teeth or the muscles of the stomach
Chemical Digestion The liquids produced by the body that help breakdown the food
Ptyalin The digestive juice in saliva that breaks down carbohydrates into glucose
Hydrochloric Acid Stomach acid that kills germs and activates digestive enzymes
Pancreatic Juice Digestive juice secreted by pancreas that breaks down carbohydrates and proteins
Pepsin Enzyme in stomach that breaks down proteins
Bile Digestive juice produced by liver that breaks down fat in small intestine
Gall Bladder Sac on liver that stores bile until it is needed
Esophagus muscular tube that leads from throat to stomach
Peristalsis Muscular wave like motions that push food down esophagus
Stomach Digestive organ that stores food and continues the breakdown of food
Small Intestine Long muscular organ that continues the breakdown of food but also begins the absorption of food
Villi Finger-like projections in the small intestines where absorption of nutrients takes place
Large Intestine Organ where water is reabsorbed and solid waste is stored.
Pancreas Helper organ that produces pancreatic juice
Ulcer Hole in lining of tissue
Mucus Lining Protects the stomach from hydrochloric acid
Diverticulitis Inflammation of pouches in the large intestines from old waste that doesn’t get removed.
